Yes…its been a long time coming…and I continue to suffer from the blogger’s block but I cant let that keep me away for any longer…or else this blog is gonna be so deeply covered with dust that it would end up along with the dinosaurs.

As erroneous as it may seem, reality is that I love writing in here. My blog is certainly something I can’t do without. It serves to me like a portal for expression, a chance to ink down some of my memories as a student, a site to look back upon, and a random collection of events that mark my transition in to, inshaAllah, a doctor.

Talking of transitions…

Today marks the conclusion of my final posting in the field of paediatrics as a medical student…getting a hi five and a tap on the shoulder from the consultant on the last day was probably the perfect way to conclude my ward rounds. I say it’s the end to my student rounds because I enter ObGyn on Sunday, and being a male in this country its probably gonna ensure that I have light work for the next 2 months.

So what do I take with me?

Well…to begin with there is the memories of little kids lying flat in the corridors…scribbling away with crayons…while others run into different rooms…making friends and spreading infections.

I carry with me the secrets on how to block out a baby’s agonizing scream and yet listen to the fine sounds of it’s heart. How to look at a baby puke, and not go sick myself.

I have learnt to admire the intelligence of a newborn and at the same time regretfully accept that some of those most beautiful babies will grow up to be mentally retarded, socially discarded and physically avoided.

Then there are the acutely heavier moments permanently marked in my memory, such as of the blind baby with a missing kidney that struggled to breath, and the eyes of another blankly looking at me while I did CPR on him.
